Insulation: the number that matters in Idaho
R-value measures resistance to heat flow, and on garage doors it ranges from nothing on a bare single-layer steel door to R-18 and above on a three-layer polyurethane door with a thermal break.

If the garage is attached, has living space above it, or you actually use it as a workspace, the three-layer door is the one to buy. It also runs far quieter, because the sections are rigid instead of hollow.
Materials
- Steel — the default for good reason. Durable, low maintenance, widest range of styles and the best insulation options.
- Wood — beautiful, heavy, and needs refinishing on a schedule. Idaho sun and winter are hard on it.
- Composite — the wood look without the maintenance, at a higher price than steel.
- Aluminium and glass — modern full-view doors, excellent light, poor insulation unless specified carefully.
- Fibreglass — light and rot-proof, but can go brittle in hard cold.
The measurements that decide your hardware
Three numbers control everything: the rough opening, the headroom between the top of the opening and the ceiling, and the backroom from the opening to the back wall. Low headroom needs low-headroom track; a shop with a lift needs high-lift track. Getting these wrong is the usual reason a bargain install ends up crooked.
